At the Olympic Games in Tokyo for the first time, as many women as men took part and that gave Flemish television reason to Sports/woman to make, six episodes about seven Belgian top athletes. Every week a different theme, Wednesday evening’s was ‘my coaches, my team’. Who ‘makes’ the sportswoman, so to speak. The parents, for starters. The father and mother of cyclist Jolien d’Hoore put a lot of hours, emotions and “a few cars” into their “bolleke”. Athlete Élodie Ouédraogo was lucky to have a father who both loved athletics and her, athlete Rani Rosius’ mother lugs her daughter around with clean clothes and bananas.

Of course it also concerns the managers, the masseurs, the mental coaches and the mechanics. Usually they are men and usually that goes well, provided there is “trust and respect”. Men are doing everything they can to get the Belgian Cats, the Flemish basketball players, in top form, and the Red Flames, the football players, at European level. And in gymnastics it turns out that a trainer doesn’t have to be a man to abuse power. Marjorie Heuls, head coach of women’s gymnastics, was accused of intimidation and bullying by an ex-pupil. But not a word bad about her approach from gymnast Nina Derwael. Without her, she says, she would never have made it to the top.

Immoral and sensual

Keep that peak in mind, because we’re going back thirty years in time. In the documentary Basic Instinct: Sex, Tension and Stone All (leading) players look back on the enormous success of the film Basic Instinct in 1992. The film that turned actress Sharon Stone into a global star. Just in time, she says, because she was already 32, and that is very old to break through as an actress. For a while, the documentary seems to tell just that story: film makes actress famous. But in the last ten, twelve minutes the picture tilts so much that I honestly don’t know very well whether Basic Instinct Stone made or broken. She herself says that all in all she is happy with the film, but she seems to want to find that, perhaps because otherwise all the misery it caused for her private life and career would be for nothing.

The film script was “immoral, violent and sensual,” said director Paul Verhoeven, who took scriptwriter Joe Eszterhas exactly thirteen days to write it and sell it for $4 million. The male lead was already forgiven, that was Michael Douglas, who did feel like a „slam dance”, a controversial film. But it was a long search for an actress who could play the murderous, bisexual, genius writer. Verhoeven: “In addition to Michael Douglas, a co-star had to come.” No stranger Sharon Stone.

The film, says director Verhoeven, was ultimately all about Stone. This was mainly due to that interrogation scene where she sits opposite three cops and crosses her legs, revealing a tuft of pubic hair for a split second. During the filming she was especially concerned about her wide arm gestures, because bare women’s armpits did not pass the film rating at the time.

She has taken off her underwear at the director’s request. She trusted him “to a degree.” The director says about this: “I asked her: do you do everything I ask? She said yes. And she never protested after that.” That the pubic hair scene would be in the film was not discussed with her, she says. “Inconceivable that it would not have been discussed with Michael Douglas if a piece of penis had been in the picture.” The editor refused to delete the scene. He says in the documentary what he then said to her: “This makes you famous.” And reviled, if I understand correctly.
