The Mobile Unit (ME) took action in the center of Rotterdam on Sunday evening due to unrest after Morocco’s World Cup victory over Belgium. A group of 500 people created a grim atmosphere, the https://twitter.com/POL_Rotterdam/status/1596916892790566912. The ME has also been deployed in The Hague and Amsterdam.

The ME carried out charges in Rotterdam. Among other things, glass and fireworks were thrown at officers. At about 7:30 PM things quieted down. An unknown number of people were arrested and two officers were injured. “One suffered hearing damage and the other got something against his head,” said a police spokesman.

There was also a lot of nuisance on the Mercatorplein in Amsterdam-West. Fires have broken out, fireworks have been set off and people have set a car on fire. The ME was not used in the first instance. That has now happened, reports the police https://twitter.com/POL_Amsterdam/status/1596937775676534784. Attendees are asked to leave the square.

In The Hague it was restless on the Vaillantplein. Fireworks were thrown and supporters of the Moroccan national team opened the car doors of passers-by. The square is now empty. One person has been arrested, the police say to NU.nl.

Things remained quieter in other cities in the Netherlands. Street fires broke out here and there in Utrecht and Amersfoort. The police there speak of a festive atmosphere.

Riots broke out earlier in the Belgian capital Brussels on Sunday evening. There, too, fires broke out and cars and electric scooters were destroyed. Police used water cannons and tear gas against rioters.

Morocco surprisingly won 2-0 against Belgium at the World Cup on Sunday. The North Africans keep a good view of reaching the eighth finals.
