National Fireworks canceled due to strong wind, other fireworks shows Rotterdam also canceled | Rotterdam

--

With video | UpdateThe National Fireworks at the Erasmus Bridge will not take place tonight. The municipality thinks it is too dangerous to continue the show due to the weather conditions. The National Children’s Fireworks on the Holland Amerikakade will also be canceled this New Year’s Eve, as well as the shows in Nesselande and Hoek van Holland.

Mark Rouwenhorst of organizing JMR Event Makers is visibly disappointed. “Finally, the fireworks could continue after two years of absence due to corona. Now it’s throwing a spanner in the works again.” According to Rouwenhorst, the decision was taken in close consultation with the government and meteorological services. “The closer you get to the moment, the more accurate the forecasts become. You don’t want to call it off when there are already 60,000 people on the quay.”

The fireworks displays were already in doubt because of the strong winds blowing across the country. As a result, fireworks shows have already been canceled throughout the country, including those at the Hofvijver in The Hague and the fireworks show at the A’DAM Tower in Amsterdam.

Old and new

The cancellation of the show to welcome 2023 is a hard blow for Rotterdammers. Not only do many thousands of people come to watch every year, this year it also serves as an alternative for everyone who loves fireworks: in the Maasstad, setting off fireworks for private individuals is not allowed for the first time this New Year’s Eve, just like in neighboring municipality of Schiedam.

A fireworks show is also planned there on Saturday evening to ring out 2022. A spokesperson previously reported that a decision will not be made until the evening itself. “Unless the weather conditions for Schiedam are so clear sooner.”

Safety

A spokesman for the municipality of Rotterdam says that the strong wind will probably not die down before midnight tonight. “As a result, we have already decided to cancel the shows. Not only for safety, but also so that people don’t come to the show for nothing.”

Various traffic measures were announced. These will be cancelled, says the spokesperson, except for one measure. “The Erasmus Bridge will remain closed to traffic. That’s because some things have already been installed there, which need to be removed.”

Alternative show?

There will be no alternative show for the National Fireworks tonight. The live performance of Rolf Sanchez from Rotterdam will continue, to be seen via RTL, and lights will be switched on on the bridge, but nothing will be organized for a large audience. Also, the fireworks show will not be moved to a date in January, as is happening in Amsterdam with the show on the A’Dam tower.
