The top match between the women of Ajax and FC Twente has become prey for the team of coach Joran Pot. Renate Jansen scored the only goal of the match halfway through the first half. Thanks to the victory, FC Twente’s lead in the rankings has grown to five points.
In an evenly matched first half, both teams were mainly guilty of sloppiness. There was therefore no clear dominance. The first opportunity was for the home team in the opening phase, but goalkeeper Daniëlle de Jong was able to save the day. When Romée Leuchter attempted a goal, the closing post did not have to intervene moments later. The Ajax striker’s shot went wide.
On the other hand, Ajax goalkeeper Regina van Eijk was left without an answer. Liz Rijsbergen managed with some luck to reach Renate Jansen, who then finished calmly in the far corner (0-1). Ten minutes before the tea break, Marit Auée even seemed to score the second goal in an artistic way, but she saw her effort cleared from the goal line.
After the break, Ajax’s danger mainly came from the second line. Romée Leuchter missed a good opportunity and towards the final phase, Nadine Noordam aimed at the crossbar. The home team slowly increased the pressure and FC Twente was unable to take advantage of the spaces that Ajax gave away. However, Twente remained without damage at the back, so Renate Jansen’s only goal proved to be enough for the victory.
In front of the ESPN camera, Renate Jansen confessed that football can be much better. “We played reasonably well at times in the first half, but not nearly as good as we can be. We know where our qualities lie. It just doesn’t always work out. After the break, Ajax was in control, but we all fought to keep a clean sheet. And it worked.”
After seven games, FC Twente is still clear in the competition. Next Friday, the team will take on FC Utrecht, the number two in the rankings, at home. That game starts at 7:30 PM.
