At least two people have been killed in an attack on the Ukrainian city of Kherson, according to Ukraine. The country blames Russia. The claims have not been independently verified.
The shooting took place around 9 a.m. in a parking lot in Kherson. Images of the aftermath of the artillery attack are circulating on social media. Firefighters extinguish destroyed cars. Ukrainian authorities say the two victims worked for a transportation company.
Russian troops regularly fire on Kherson. On Sunday, Ukraine said at least five people were injured in an attack on the city, including a three-year-old girl. Ukraine also reported drone attacks on the capital Kyiv last weekend.
There has been heavy fighting in the Kherson region for some time. Ukrainian troops have managed to capture positions on the eastern side of the Dnipro River. It would have succeeded in driving the Russians back a few kilometers there.
The Institute for the Study of War confirmed the crossing, as did the Russian-installed governor of the largely occupied Kherson region.
Shortly afterwards, Ukraine also reported fighting on the southern bank of the Dnipro. The country says it has carried out “successful actions”, but these have not been independently verified.
