WhatsApp was hit by a global outage on Wednesday evening. As a result, users cannot send and receive messages. The problems now appear to have been largely resolved, although some people are still reporting problems.

The extent of the disruption is not clear. Against news agency Reuters Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, says it is aware of the issues and is working on a solution.

The first reports from people in the Netherlands who were experiencing problems were received on the disturbance site Allestoringen.nl around 8 p.m. The number of reports rose to over 120,000. Around 8:45 PM, WhatsApp seemed to be working again, but many people are still having problems sending or receiving messages.

Problems were also reported from other countries. Tens of thousands of reports were received from India, Brazil and the United Kingdom.

In addition, Instagram also seemed not to be working properly for some time. Those problems now appear to be over.

NU.nl has asked Meta for a response, but has not yet received one. Meta recently no longer has a spokesperson in the Netherlands.
