Five residents of the southern Chinese metropolis of Guangzhou were killed by a tornado on Saturday. Another 33 people were injured, the news agency reported Xinhua Sunday.
According to a preliminary assessment, the tornado had an intensity of level three on a scale of five. The storm damaged about 140 factory buildings, but as far as is known, homes were spared.
Rescue work has already been largely completed in the provincial capital, which has a population of eighteen million. The city is one of the most important economic centers of China.
A week ago, Guangzhou and the surrounding province of Guangdong were hit by torrential rain. At least four people died and 100,000 people had to be evacuated.
