Nearly two hundred activists were arrested on Saturday during new pro-Palestinian protests at American universities. The arrests were at Northeastern University in Boston, Arizona State University and Indiana University.
Protesters had set up a tent camp at the educational institution in Boston. Management asked them to leave, but they refused. On Saturday, police demolished the camp and arrested 102 activists.
In Arizona, a university encampment was also demolished, taking 69 people. Police also intervened in Indiana. Erected tents were removed and 23 activists were arrested.
The activists are demonstrating against the war in Gaza and the US government’s policy on it. They want universities to cut their financial ties with Israel and stop investing in companies “that make the war possible.” At some universities the atmosphere of the demonstrations has changed. Anti-Semitic slogans are shouted and there are threats and physical intimidation. Jewish students are afraid to go to universities.
The nationwide wave of protests began at Columbia University, where dozens of demonstrators were arrested last week after university authorities called in police. Since then, similar actions have been held at more and more universities in the US and more than seven hundred demonstrators have been arrested.
