Ireland wants to change the law to allow asylum seekers to be sent back to the United Kingdom. According to Irish Justice Minister Helen McEntee, around 80 percent of people seeking asylum in Ireland come from the UK.

The asylum seekers enter Ireland via Northern Ireland, which is part of the UK. According to British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, the growing number of asylum seekers traveling to Ireland proves the deterrent effect of the plan to put them on a plane to Rwanda.

Against the Irish broadcaster RTE McEntee said she wants to quickly stop the new flow of asylum seekers. “That is why we are discussing emergency legislation in the cabinet this week that will allow people to return to the United Kingdom.”

The minister will discuss the issue with the British Home Secretary in London on Monday.

Last week, the British Parliament approved the government’s plans to send asylum seekers to Rwanda. The British Prime Minister promised to send asylum seekers to Rwanda within ten to twelve weeks. This mainly concerns asylum seekers who entered the country illegally by boat.
