ARTIS was hit on Tuesday by an attack with ransomware. Criminals want 1 million euros in crypto currency to release computer systems, the Amsterdam zoo reports.

It is not known who is behind the attack and which systems were affected. It is also unknown whether data has been stolen and whether ARTIS is considering paying the ransom. The zoo says it cannot share further details due to ongoing investigations.

ARTIS has reported the matter to the police and is being advised by an expert in the field of cybercrime for next steps. In addition, it has reported a possible data breach to the Dutch Data Protection Authority, although it is not known whether criminals have gained access to personal data and e-mail traffic.

After ARTIS was informed of a cyber attack by an external IT partner, a crisis team was immediately put together, says a spokesperson for the zoo. “Our own IT department has also been scaled up with specialists in the field of cybercrime. Measures were immediately taken to prevent further access to our systems in order to stop the digital attack.”
