ABC islands Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao are preparing for tropical storm Bonnie. There is a curfew in Curaçao from 11 a.m. local time and Aruba is preparing hospitals. KLM has moved two flights to the islands.

A curfew had previously been imposed at 4 p.m. due to an approaching tropical storm, but Prime Minister Gilmar ‘Pik’ Pisas announced during a hastily scheduled press conference that Curaçao will sooner have to deal with heavy rainfall and strong wind gusts. After 11 a.m. you are no longer allowed on the street. Government departments have been closed all Wednesday.

The peak of the tropical storm is expected in Curaçao between 7 and 9 p.m. (local time) and will also cross Bonaire and Aruba. A storm warning has been issued on the ABC islands and a code red applies. Bonnie will pass south of the ABC islands, according to the meteorological services.

Measures have also been taken on the other two islands. The government of Aruba will send all officials home on Wednesday afternoon. They are free the rest of the day and Thursday. Schools are not allowed to open on Thursdays and Fridays. Hospitals on the islands are being put on standby, which means, among other things, that non-emergency operations and appointments are being moved.

Flights moved

Two KLM flights scheduled for Wednesday to the ABC islands are being moved because of Bonnie. A flight to Curaçao has been postponed to Thursday morning. Another flight to Bonaire via Aruba has been postponed until further notice. A new time will only be scheduled when it is clear when the aircraft can land safely on the Caribbean islands.

TUI previously indicated that it does not expect any problems for flights to Curaçao and Bonaire. Those two planes, which were scheduled slightly earlier than the KLM flights, departed with minor delays. For Thursday, both TUI and KLM will monitor the situation.
