A major fire has completely destroyed roadside restaurant Weg next to the A6 near Almere. No one was injured, fire department spokesman Wim van Eck said. The fire master signal was given around 03:40 a.m., and the after-extinguishing was discontinued around 07:30 a.m.

The fire broke out late in the evening around 11:20 p.m. on Sunday. According to Van Eck, it was soon clear that the restaurant would be lost: “When the fire brigade arrived, we quickly concluded that there was nothing left to save.”

Due to the spreading flames and the location of the restaurant, the fire brigade immediately scaled up to a major fire. Wim van Eck: “We had to deal with various points of attention.” Restaurant Weg is located along the A6 and next to McDonald’s. There is also a gas tank about 20 meters away. He was immediately monitored after the arrival of the emergency services.

In addition, there was ‘fly fire’, or flying sparks, which is extra dangerous because of the drought. To fight the fire, the fire brigade deployed four fire extinguishers and two aerial platforms. A large water transport took water from the Weerwater to be able to ‘feed’ all fire engines.

The restaurant is normally open until 22:00 on Sundays. No one was in the building at the time of the fire, according to firefighters.

Difficult to investigate the cause
The fire brigade let the fire burn out in a controlled manner in the night from Sunday to Monday. Nothing is known about the cause yet. According to the spokesperson for the Flevoland Fire Brigade, this may also be difficult to investigate due to the condition of the building.
