The wind gusts can have a speed of 100 to 120 kilometers per hour. “The hail can be 2 to 4 centimeters in size,” says Elferink. “It also rains a lot, tens of millimeters. And there is a lot of thunder.” The supercell races through Limburg and East Brabant. “Locally there can be severe weather and flying roof tiles, but it is not yet possible to say exactly where that is.”
Elferink advises people in Limburg and East Brabant to secure their garden furniture properly. ,,Fold umbrellas, secure trampolines. Anything that can be moved by the wind: bring it inside.”
The KNMI has issued code orange for the south of Limburg. The weather institute warns of very strong wind gusts, hail and heavy rain between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM.
A supercell can form in an atmosphere that meets a number of specific conditions. For example, there must be sufficient heat and moisture in the air. The temperature of the air must be much colder at high altitudes than close to the Earth’s surface. Higher in the atmosphere, the wind must also be considerably stronger than near the earth’s surface.
A low pressure area from France is approaching the Netherlands and entering through Limburg. ,,It is warming up in Limburg this afternoon, where it can be 24 to 25 degrees. That low-pressure area reacts to that temperature and that can cause a supercell,” says Elferink. “The showers will eventually move on to Germany. The chance of more severe weather is even greater there.”
In the rest of the Netherlands, such severe weather is not expected. “There is a lot of rain there.” It will be 18 degrees by the sea and inland the mercury can rise to 26 degrees. Saturday there will be sunny periods with only some light rain in the morning in the north. With a moderate wind it will be 17 to 21 degrees.
