An explosion at a science festival in the northern Spanish city of Girona has injured 18 people, including 10 children between the ages of 3 and 13. Five victims are in hospital with serious injuries.

The accident happened last night during a demonstration of an experiment with nitrogen. A vat of liquid nitrogen exploded as an audience of 200 to 300 people watched, local media reported.

Images of the blast are circulating on social media:

Most of the victims were hit by flying pieces of metal from the barrel. They suffered no burns.

A 5-year-old girl suffered the most serious injuries. She is being treated in hospital, as are two other children, ages 10 and 12, and a 47-year-old and 31-year-old man. The other thirteen victims have since been released from hospital.

The accident occurred in the House of Culture of the Catalan city. The University of Girona organized the festival. A spokesperson for the university says the experiment has previously been carried out without any problems. He doesn’t understand why things could go wrong now.
