Remco Evenepoel is second in the youth classification behind rosette wearer Andreas Leknessund, but will start ‘just’ in the rainbow jersey in the Giro d’Italia tomorrow due to UCI regulations. Only as number four in the young rider classification is it Thymen Arensman who will ride in white tomorrow. Cycling Flash explains how.

After Tuesday’s stage, Leknessund is the new leader in both the general and the young rider classification, but because the Norwegian cannot wear two jerseys at the same time, the subordinate jersey (the white jersey) is passed on to the number two in this secondary classification.
That is Evenepoel, who is 28 seconds behind the Norwegian. Evenepoel will not wear the white jersey tomorrow. This has to do with the rainbow jersey that hangs around the shoulders of the Belgian. According to UCI article 2.6.018 champion jerseys are an exception to the wearing of classification jerseys if the rider is not the actual leader himself.
Portuguese champion
That is not Evenepoel, so he passes on the jersey to João Almeida. The attentive viewer has already seen that Almeida did not wear the white jersey in recent days, because he is currently Portuguese champion.
Ilan Van Wilder therefore drove in white in recent days. Because the Belgian had to release today, it is now Arensman’s turn to borrow the white jersey as number four.
