World Championship with a ‘sweet edge’ for Van Opzeeland, who qualifies for the Olympic Games

Luuc van Opzeeland has qualified for the Olympic Games next summer with a bronze World Cup medal. At the iQFoil World Championships in Lanzarote, only compatriot Kiran Badloe could keep him from an Olympic ticket, but Badloe did not get further than fifth place.

The last day of the World Wind Foiling Championships followed a tournament format. As number 1 in the World Cup standings, Van Opzeeland had already qualified for the final, so he was already assured of a medal. In that final, the Italian Nicolo Renna was the strongest, the silver went to the Pole Pawel Tarnowski.

Badloe fifth

Badloe, the Olympic champion in the ‘old’ RS:X class (windsurfing), entered the semi-finals, where four foilers battled for the two remaining spots in the final. Badloe started cautiously, so he only got further than a fourth place in the semi-finals and a fifth place at the World Championships.

As a result, Van Opzeeland can no longer be overtaken when it comes to qualifying for the Games. Three tournaments counted for qualification – last year’s World Cup, this weekend’s World Cup and the World Cup match in Mallorca in April – but Van Opzeeland already has enough points to ensure qualification for Paris.

Just short of a medal of honor for Wennekes

For the women, Sara Wennekes started in the quarter-finals. After three sailors were taken off course due to false starts, she reached the semi-finals by coming second in the quarter-finals. Wennekes came third in the semi-finals, which meant she just missed out on the final and finished fourth in the World Cup.

Moreover, Wennekes has secured her Olympic ticket by finishing above Lilian de Geus. De Geus finished her World Cup in 23rd position, which meant she was not allowed to go to the final day.
