At the Visma-Lease a Bike press conference on Friday in the run-up to the Tour of Flanders, it was mainly about the man who is not there: Wout van Aert. The team gave an update on his situation and looked ahead to ‘De Ronde’.

“Riders are very good at putting things into perspective and looking ahead, but Wout wasn’t that far this morning,” sports director Grischa Niermann said. Sporza. Earlier in the day, the German had visited the battered Belgian in the hospital.

Van Aert crashed on Wednesday in the dreaded descent towards the Kanarieberg in Dwars door Vlaanderen, the last test for ‘De Ronde’. Due to a broken collarbone and broken ribs, he will have to cancel the rest of his spring anyway.

“Hopefully he can go home soon, but that is not yet clear,” Niermann said. “He also realizes that: you can have many ideas about what you want, but you must first be able to go to the toilet pain-free, so to speak. Hopefully that will be possible in a few days.”

“I don’t know when you will be able to cycle again. Considering the circumstances, things are going quite well, but it has not been nothing,” Niermann continued. “We always have a plan B, but it is far too early to think about it.”

“He says we can go for it even if he’s not there.”

While Van Aert underwent checks in the hospital on Wednesday, Tiesj Benoot and winner Matteo Jorgenson colored the rest of the race. They will have to get up again on Sunday in the Tour of Flanders together with the recovered Dylan van Baarle.

Van Aert already sent his teammates encouraging words from his hospital bed. “He says we can go for it, even if he is not there,” Benoot said. “He will be our biggest supporter. That motivates us.”

“It is of course shit that we have lost our leader,” Benoot said. “We have been together more in the last three months than we have seen our partner. But I am proud of how we dealt with it as a team.”
