Koen Bouwman will not finish the Tour de Romandie. The 30-year-old Dutchman does not feel 100 percent fit and has therefore given up, writes his employer Visma | Lease a Bike on social media.

After five stages, Bouwman was 36th in the general classification, just over eleven minutes behind leader Carlos Rodríguez. On Saturday he crossed the finish line in 45th place in the queen stage to Leysin. “Unfortunately, Koen will not participate in the final stage. He doesn’t feel 100 percent fit,” his team reports via X.

Disappointment in the run-up to the Giro
The experienced climber hoped to put the finishing touches to the upcoming Giro d’Italia (4-26 May) in the Tour de Romandie, but is faced with a minor setback. The question now is whether Bouwman can appear at the start of the Tour of Italy in his very best form in a week’s time.

Bouwman was initially not part of the Visma | selection Lease a Bike for the Giro, but was called up earlier this month to replace the injured Wilco Kelderman. Bouwman managed to steal the show in the Giro two years ago, by winning two stages and clinching the mountains classification.
