Xavi thinks it is downright ridiculous that Vitor Roque was sent off in Barcelona’s away match against Alavés. The coach thinks of a plot against his team as a result of the Negreira case.

Barcelona became embroiled in a corruption case at the beginning of last year, involving payments to referee boss Negreira. The consequences of this haunt Barça on the pitch, says Xavi. According to him, his team is often disadvantaged partly because of the accusations. On Saturday evening, new signing Vitor Roque was sent off the field. He received his second yellow card after a game in which he seemed to be the victim of a foul.

‘We will appeal against that card for Vitor Roque anyway. It was another mistake by the referee,” Xavi said to the Spanish press after the 1-3 win in Vitoria-Gasteiz. ‘It was simply unfair that he was sent off. You all saw it. All I want is for us to be able to compete normally. I’m not going to talk about referees anymore. It was another obvious mistake today. We are paying the price for the Negreira case. I’m not going to say anything more about it. You can all see what’s happening. If I say more about it, you’ll kill me again.’

Xavi was asked for a reaction to Carlo Ancelotti’s words during the post-match press conference. The Real Madrid coach showed the comments from Barcelona about favoring The Royal found tiring. “I am a professional and I don’t want to lower myself to that level,” Ancelotti said. Xavi opted for de-escalation: ‘I have a very good relationship with him. He may have felt pressured by my words. That was not the intention. I have a lot of respect for Carlo Ancelotti.’
