‘Hamas to Egypt on Monday for talks on truce’
Hamas will send a delegation to the Egyptian capital Cairo on Monday to negotiate a ceasefire in Gaza. An anonymous source told the Reuters news agency. Discussions will include a proposal for a truce of countries that will help mediate and the Israeli response to it.
News website Axios reported on the authority of two Israeli sources that Israel’s latest proposal states that the country is willing to discuss the “restoration of lasting peace” in Gaza once all hostages are released. So far, Israel is unwilling to agree to a permanent ceasefire because the government wants to achieve all goals first, including the end of Hamas.
There has been talk of a truce in Gaza for months. In recent weeks, those negotiations seemed to have reached an impasse. This weekend, World Economic Forum (WEF) chairman Børge Brende said that things seem to be moving again and there is “some new momentum”.
Gaza will also be discussed at a WEF meeting in Saudi Arabia this weekend. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas are among others. Israel is not present.
