In the last stage with start and finish in Istanbul, the riders rode only one of the five local rounds, behind the organization’s car. Van den Broek finished the race with a lead of four seconds over Merhawi Kudus from Eritrea and nine seconds ahead of Britain’s Paul Double.
Van den Broek took the lead in the rankings on Friday with a win in the sixth stage, in which he defeated Kudus in the sprint after a long climb. The stage victory was only his second professional victory, after a stage victory last year in the Tour of Qinghai Lake.
“It has become a dream week,” Van den Broek, from Warmond, responded via his team. “We started with a stage win for Fabio (Jakobsen) and then Tobi (Lund Andresen) took three stages. I received great support from the team in Friday’s mountain stage. I surprised myself by taking the leader’s jersey there. It’s a shame we couldn’t go for it more today, but this was a good decision for the safety of the riders. This victory gives a lot of confidence for the future.”
