A shocking discovery this morning in the barn in Berkel en Rodenrijs in South Holland that burned to the ground on Sunday. A body was found in a car in the shed on Noordeindseweg. The police immediately started an investigation. Two arson suspects were arrested on Sunday. They are still stuck.
“Yesterday we were not allowed onto the property,” says Kimball Vollebregt, the owner of the barn. “But this morning it did. So my thirteen year old son and I took a tour of the grounds. Suddenly my son shouts: There is a body in the car. We immediately called 911. He is of course very shocked. I have no words for how he could see this. I think he does need victim assistance.”
The boy could see the car from a few feet away and saw that someone was inside. “I think they set that car on fire and then the rest of the shed went.” According to his son, the car was not deep in the shed, but at the front as if it had just driven in.
Two suspects are still in custody
The police maintain that the body was found this morning, when further investigation into arson was conducted. “Yesterday we could not enter the shed, but this morning we were able to,” says a spokesperson. Shortly after the alarm about the flames coming out of the shed, two suspects were arrested in the area on Sunday afternoon: a 28-year-old man of no fixed abode and a 21-year-old Rotterdam resident. Their role is under investigation.
Kimball Vollebregt from the site has no idea who the suspects are and who the victim in the car is. “Who owns that car is still a big mystery.” The man says he rents his shed to an older person, with whom he had contact after the fire. “This tenant says he knows nothing.”
Fire spread to thatched farmhouse
The barn burned down during the fire. The fire spread to the thatched farmhouse on the property, where the owner’s brother lives. This farm could not be saved either. “I am homeless,” says Mario Vollebregt, the brother whose company Berkeltuin.nl is also located here. “The damage is enormous, but as soon as possible my son and I will start building our business again.” He says that the suspects fled through his property. “I don’t know who the tenant of the shed is. I never got there.”
