This is a standoff.

We have Austin police and state troopers who are keeping a line here preventing these student protesters from getting any closer to the building where [the police] had been holding those dozens of earlier student protesters who were being detained.

Let me explain how we got to this point.

This morning on campus, there was a silent peaceful protest by student protesters as well as faculty members. Then suddenly, an encampment sprung up for the first time. Some four tents were erected on the lawn where these peaceful protests have been occurring.

Protesters gathered in a tight circle surrounding that encampment and refused to move. Mere moments passed before the state troopers armed in their riot gear quickly arrived. They announced to the students to disperse or risk arrest.

Now, you are seeing what appears to be a conflict between the student protesters and the police that have been holding them back.

I have been seeing some pepper spray being deployed on the protesters here. I have to emphasize this tense atmosphere that has gripped the UT Austin campus for over two hours since that initial circle, the encampment was broken up leading to some 43 arrests by police.
