“We are very sad.” This is what the owner of two dogs said on Saturday morning, found dead in a luxury dog boarding facility in Woudenberg, Utrecht. A total of ten dogs died there. Much is still unclear about what exactly happened.

The dog owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, calls the situation unreal. “It is impossible to write down what happens to you with a pen. It was even a trial weekend for us before our holiday next summer, to see if this dog boarding house was something for us.”

Earlier, another person involved told RTL Nieuws that the police found a total of thirteen dogs on Saturday in a shipping container on the grounds of the guest house in Woudenberg. “There was only one ventilation grille in that container. So those dogs most likely suffocated due to a lack of oxygen.”

The police cannot confirm this story.

The dog owner who spoke to RTL Nieuws today finds the rumors difficult to hear. “These speculations about what has happened don’t make it any easier. You hear so many different stories from everyone. That’s why many of us are so careful, you don’t want to destroy more than has already been destroyed.”

According to the dog owner, the coming period will be all about arranging practical matters. “For example, consider cremating your dog. That is super confronting. Every phone call I make about this makes me cry again. You get a bit of a dead feeling inside.”

The police will perform an autopsy on one of the dogs this week to determine the cause of death. The internal examination of the dead animal is carried out by a veterinarian.

The police cannot yet say whether the owners of the dead dogs have filed a report. According to lawyer Brigitte Roodveldt, who represents six of the nine affected dog owners, this depends on the outcome of the investigation.
