Jupiler Pro League (Belgium)

Royal Antwerp has lost for the sixth time in seven games in the Champions’ Play-Offs in the Jupiler Pro League. The team of coach Mark van Bommel, working on its last weeks in Antwerp, lost 1-2 to Club Brugge in its own Bosuil Stadium. The team of Norwegian coach Ronny Deila is at the top of the play-offs after six victories in a row, after finishing fourth in the regular season with 19 points less than Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

Vincent Janssen received a yellow card after just five seconds when he immediately delivered a double blow from the kick-off. It is the fastest yellow card ever in the Belgian competition.

Club Brugge took the lead shortly after half time. It was an unfortunate goal for the home team. A cross from Maxim de Cuyper ended up in the goal via the leg of Antwerp captain Toby Alderweireld.

After Gyrano Kerk – substituted for Jurgen Ekkelenkamp – did not see his cross converted into a goal, the score was 0-2 at the other end. Danish winger Andreas Skov Olsen cut down defender Soumaïla Coulibaly and shot into the left corner.

A penalty brought Antwerp back into the match in the 67th minute. This was preceded by a foul by Joel Ordóñez on Michel Ange Balikwisha. Ange Balikwisha passed Club goalkeeper Simon Mignolet from the spot: 1-2. Owen Wijndal played the entire match for Antwerp, Vincent Janssen stayed behind in the dressing room after half-time. At Brugge, Bjorn Meijer had to leave with an injury shortly before half-time.

Club Brugge is now in the lead with 45 points. The derby between Royale Union Saint-Gilloise and Anderlecht is scheduled in Brussels at 6:30 PM. They now stand at 41 and 42 points respectively. After this weekend, there are still three rounds to go in the play-offs. Next Thursday (3.30 pm) Royal Antwerp and Union will play against each other in the Belgian cup final.

Premier League (England)

Chelsea has recorded a convincing victory over West Ham United in the Premier League. Argentinian coach Mauricio Pochettino’s team won the London derby 5-0. Cole Palmer (’15), Conor Gallagher (’30), Noni Madueke (’36) and Nicolas Jackson (’48 and ’80) scored the goals at Stamford Bridge.

Palmer now has 21 goals in the Premier League, but Erling Haaland is heading for his second top scorer title in England after his four goals (now 25) against Wolves (5-1) on Saturday. Chelsea are now seventh with 54 points. Manchester United can surpass Newcastle United and Chelsea in the rankings on Monday evening (9 p.m.), but Erik ten Hag’s team must win the away match at Crystal Palace to do so.

In the south of England, Brighton & Hove Albion won 1-0 against Aston Villa with a late goal. Brazilian striker João Pedro scored the winning goal for Brighton in the 87th minute from the rebound of a penalty saved by Robin Olsen. Bart Verbruggen and Joël Veltman played the entire match for the team of Italian coach Roberto De Zerbi. Jan Paul van Hecke watched with a hamstring injury.

Aston Villa is fourth with 67 points from 36 matches. That is five points more than Tottenham Hotspur, but Ange Postecoglou’s team has also played one game less. So it remains exciting in the battle for the Champions League ticket.

Aston Villa faces a tough job in Athens on Thursday to reach the Conference League final. The team of Basque coach Unai Emery surprisingly lost 2-4 to Olympiakos at Villa Park on Thursday.

Bundesliga (Germany)

Bayer Leverkusen has also remained undefeated in its 48th official match of this season. The team of coach Xabi Alonso convinced in the away match against number six Eintracht Frankfurt: 1-5. Two-time Dutch international Jeremie Frimpong made it 1-4 for the Bundesliga champion in the 77th minute, five minutes after coming on as a substitute. Frimpong now has 14 goals and 11 assists in 43 matches for Bayer Leverkusen this season.

After 48 matches, Bayer Leverkusen has forty wins and eight draws, with a goal difference of 138 goals for and 36 goals against. Xabi Alonso’s team equaled Benfica’s European record from December 1963 to February 1965.

Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka and Czech striker Patrik Schick scored for Leverkusen in the first half, with Frenchman Hugo Ekitike returning the favor in between. Exequiel Palacios, Frimpong and Victor Boniface put their names on the scoreboard after half-time.

Leverkusen secured the national title last month, the first in club history. On Thursday, the club will defend a 0-2 win from the first leg at home in the semi-final of the Europa League against AS Roma. The German Cup final against FC Kaiserslautern will follow on Saturday, May 25, which is fourteenth in the 2. Bundesliga.
