The US government has revoked the export licenses of chip companies Intel and Qualcomm. As a result, these companies can no longer supply chips to the Chinese tech group Huawei. The British business newspaper Financial Times reports this based on conversations with insiders. According to them, revoking the licenses would have consequences for the supplies of chips for laptops and telephones.

The US Department of Commerce confirmed to the newspaper that “certain licenses for exports to Huawei” have been revoked, but did not name any companies. The Chinese tech company has been struggling with US export restrictions for years. The Americans fear that Huawei is making espionage possible through backdoors in its technology.

Last month, FT reported that the US was urging allies to further restrict exports of chips and related goods and technology to China. These allies also included the Netherlands. According to the newspaper, Washington had increased pressure over concerns about Huawei’s development of advanced chips. One of these chips was built into a smartphone that appeared last year, the Mate 60 Pro.
