Former Ajax player Tijjani Babangida has been admitted to hospital in a critical but stable condition after a traffic accident in his native Nigeria. His 47-year-old brother Ibrahim, a former FC Volendam player, did not survive the accident, the Nigerian Football Association reports.

The accident happened on the highway from Kaduna to Zaria. The former international’s wife and a worker were also in the car. They were taken to a hospital.

Fifty-year-old Babangida is conscious, according to the Nigerian Football Association. He also played for Roda JC, Vitesse and VVV-Venlo in the Netherlands. Babangida played 102 matches for Ajax between 1996 and 2003. The attacker scored 24 times and provided 15 assists.

Babangida won gold with Nigeria at the Atlanta Olympics. He also went to the 1998 World Cup with the ‘Super Eagles’. He played 36 international matches for the African country.

Ibrahim Babangida is 47 years old. He played football for FC Volendam from 1997 to 2002. He was a youth international for his country and won the Under-17 World Cup with Nigeria in 1993.
