He has been admitted to hospital in a critical but stable condition, the Nigerian Football Association reported to various media from that country. Babangida, 50, is said to be conscious.

Ibrahim passed away

His brother Ibrahim, former FC Volendam player (1997-2002), did not survive the accident. He is buried today. He was 47 years old.

The accident happened on the highway from Kaduna to Zaria. Tijani Babangida’s wife and a maid were also in the car with the former international and were taken to a hospital.

Gold at the Olympic Games

Tijjani Babangida won gold with Nigeria at the Atlanta Olympic Games. He is also president of the Nigerian Professional Footballers’ Association.

Former footballer Emmanuel Babayaro, vice president of the association, commented on the event: “Comrades! Let us pray for our President, Tijani Babangida, who just suffered a horrific car accident along Kaduna-Zaria Road. Ibrahim Babangida, his younger brother, died on the spot from the accident while the president and his family were taken to hospital. May the soul of Ibrahim Babangida rest in peace with God, amen.”
