BOXMEER | From Friday, May 10, Hotel De Baronie on Spoorstraat in Boxmeer will accommodate 48 status holders, spread over 24 rooms. These people are expected to stay in the Boxmeer hotel for six months. The housing of these status holders, who all have a residence permit, falls within a national action by the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) to reduce the pressure on reception locations such as Ter Apel.

According to a council information letter (RIB) published on Friday morning, May 10, the municipal council of Land van Cuijk was only informed by COA of this development by telephone on Wednesday evening, May 7. The first beds were already placed in the rooms on Friday morning. It can be concluded from the council information letter that action is being carried out on behalf of the government, which means that the council has “no formal power of approval”.

The reason for reception at this location is the “particularly high” pressure on asylum reception locations such as Ter Apel. “With an occupancy of more than 100% at all reception locations, the shelter has run out of resources. COA is expected to be short of thousands of places in the coming period.” This is partly due to the increasing occupancy of reception locations, the closure of many (emergency) locations without new ones being added and the fact that status holders have to wait a long time for housing within a municipality.

To reduce the pressure on the asylum centers, COA has started a national campaign to accommodate status holders in small hotels. Where possible, COA tries to accommodate status holders who are already linked to this region in the Boxmeer hotel. The costs of the accommodation and care of the status holders are entirely borne by the COA.
