Gold for Joey Pop at the ONK Open water Swimming

Maasland 13.09.2022 – In the weekend of 9 & 10 September, the time had finally come. The Open Dutch Open Water Swimming Championship.


Swimming association Vlaardingen Schiedam (ZVVS) was represented with a number of strong swimmers and a number of good results were achieved.

The best performance was performed by Joey Pop, who has lived in Maasland for 14 years. Joey became Dutch champion in the 2500 meter freestyle after an exciting match. The ZVVS swimmer was the first to touch this distance in the fast time of 34.13.23 minutes. With this win, Joey also managed to control the open water freestyle general classification in 2022.

Hilda Vrijbloed in the 10000m freestyle, Karin Stein 3000m freestyle, Irene van der Laan 3000m freestyle and Conny Boer-Buys 3000m freestyle, each in their own age category, also managed to win the Dutch title and took home gold. There were also glittering silver and bronze medals. Nadya Putter took a nice silver in the 2000m breaststroke and Karin Stein not only took home gold but also took bronze in the 2000m breaststroke.

Because this was the end of the open water swimming season, the general classification could also be drawn up and the ZVVS swimmers also won prizes here. Karin Stein was not only first in the women’s 50+ freestyle classification, but she was also the best in the breaststroke. Irene van der Laan was first in the 60+ freestyle classification. Conny Boer-Buys freestyle 70+ and Willem Putter 75+. Nadya Putter finished third in the 35+ freestyle and second in the 35+ breaststroke.

The youth also put in a top performance. For example, Joey Pop became first in the junior freestyle and Hilda Vrijbloed performed the same in the youth. With all these achievements, ZVVS was the best performing open water swimming association in the Netherlands
