Anger about hazing stunt in which a hypothermic man had to stand for hours in Hofvijver: ‘Abuse’ | the Hague

The hazing stunt in which a man became hypothermic this weekend, because he had to stand for hours in the cold Hofvijfer, is now leading to angry reactions. ‘This kind of abuse does not deserve any place in The Hague’.

D66 says it is shocked about the hazing that took place last weekend in The Hague. A man was taken from the Hofvijver in the night from Friday to Saturday by the fire brigade after he had been in the water for no less than four hours. The action was a hazing stunt.

To date, it is not known who or which student association came up with this. Council members of D66 are shocked and have asked the council for clarification and want to know who is responsible for this. The man was eventually helped out of the water after almost four hours by means of an aerial platform and a ladder.

The man was taken to hospital with hypothermia symptoms. “This is not a nice party where there is a little too much to drink,” writes councilor spokesman for safety Marije Mostert in a press release. ‘If you ensure that your aspiring members end up in hospital because of your actions, you are crossing a line that no student association should cross’. She also adds that this should not happen a second time.

Doesn’t belong here

D66 believes that a campaign like this ‘doesn’t fit in a nice student city like The Hague’. ‘Bullying, abuse or whatever you want to call these kinds of things do not belong here,’ said the spokesperson for student affairs. “This is an incident and let’s hope it stays that way. We have seen a lot of terrible things at student associations in recent years,” the spokesperson for education writes.
