The day started badly for the Netherlands. Mick van Dijke tested positive for the coronavirus and was unable to start. This put even more pressure on quick man Kooij. The Jumbo-Visma rider had to hook up during the passages on Mount Pleasant to be able to finish it with his speed.

Early flight

This tactic did not apply to the early break riders. They hoped to stay out of the peloton’s grip on the rainy course. Of these, Fabio van den Bossche, Hannes Wilksch and Mathis le Berre stayed ahead the longest.

When the gap had narrowed to half a minute, Jakub Toupalik and Alexandre Balmer tried to make the crossing. A few kilometers later they were reinforced by Lorenzo Milesi, Nicolo Buratti, Samuel Watson, Matevz Govekar and Fedorov.

Kooij can follow

At 20 kilometers from the finish, the chasing group, which became smaller and smaller during the race, caught up with everyone again. Kooij was still there, but had struggled to follow on the passages of Mount Pleasant. Moreover, he no longer had the support of his teammates.

Alex Segaert, Vacek and again Le Berre and Fedorov were the next riders to try on the last lap. They punched a gap to about twenty seconds. Frenchman Le Berre refused to cooperate after his long day in the flight. He also had three more riders in the peloton. The Belgians were also well represented. They still had four men in the front of the battle.

Last time Mount Pleasant

On the last pass of Mount Pleasant, Balmer tried to make the crossing. The Swiss soon got hold of Le Berre and a little later Segaert as well. However, he did not close the last hole on Vacek and Fedorov, after which the Swiss was caught again.

After that, no one in the chasing group wanted to drive for the lurking fast men, including Kooij. This gave the two in front more and more space. They could sprint for the win.

Fedorov clearly turned out to have the most left. When the Kazakh pushed on, the Czech gave up immediately. The chasing group finished just behind. Wærenskjold, the winner of the time trial, took the bronze. Kooij had to settle for fifth place, behind Madis Kihels.
