Pope leaves Rome for first time in months to visit prison | Abroad

--

Pope Francis visited a women’s prison in Venice where the Vatican set up a pavilion for the famous art event the Biennale. It was the first time in a long time that the Pope left Rome.

The Pope arrived at the prison by helicopter and afterward was confined mostly to a wheelchair. He suffers from health problems and has difficulty walking. His last trip was in September of last year. He then traveled to France.

“Prison is a harsh reality and problems such as overcrowding, the lack of facilities and supplies and incidents of violence cause great suffering. But it can also be a place of moral and material rebirth,” the Pope told prisoners and prison staff.

The Pope urged young people not to spend all day on their smartphones. He also said it is crucial to get out and help other people.

Venice is not the only journey

In addition to his prison visit, the Pope will visit a church and celebrate mass in the famous Basilica of San Marco. Over the next three months, the Pope will make four trips within Italy and will visit, among other things, the G7 summit in Bari.

He is also scheduled to make a long trip outside Europe in September. He will then visit Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, East Timor and Singapore, among others.

Every two years, countries set up their own pavilion in different places in the city for the Biennale. The Vatican exhibition is in the prison. The works are by nine modern artists in collaboration with detainees.
