As a little boy, Abubakar Tahiru was fascinated by nature conservation. Now at the age of 29, he takes that very literally. He held as many as 1,123 trees in one hour. With this he breaks the world record for tree hugging.

Abubakar Tahiru is currently pursuing his master’s degree in Forestry at Auburn University in the US state of Alabama. In his youth, in the countryside of his home country Ghana, he was completely obsessed with everything that had to do with trees and nature conservation. And so he recently headed out to the Tuskegee National Forest to express his love for nature in a special way.

The tree-hugging record attempt requires a participant to wrap both arms around each tree in a tight embrace without causing any damage to the trees. No tree was allowed to be hugged more than once, requiring Tahiru to move quickly between each hug. The student was also fasting for Ramadan at the time of his record attempt.

“Not being able to drink water during the entire attempt posed an extra challenge, especially considering the physical exertion required,” he told Guinness World Records afterwards. “This turned out to be helpful in some ways, as there was no need to pause for water breaks, allowing me to continue the effort uninterrupted from start to finish.” With an average of 19 trees per minute, Tahiru easily exceeded the minimum requirement of 700 trees to set the record.
