Kees van der Spek confronts old acquaintance Bram, who even cheated his family

Debt restructuring

“You have not ensured that I am protected from your creditors, as a result of which I, together with Lisa and Maaike, have had my wages garnished for years, ultimately resulting in debt restructuring. And you also failed to pay alimony. Have you ever wondered what this has done to the well-being and development of Lisa and Maaike?” says Gerda to her ex-husband. Bram does not want to respond to it at first, but Kees manages to convince him that it means something to him.

Then it is Maaike’s turn to tell her and Lisa’s story. She desperately needs some closure. “Hey, dad, that’s what I want to call you for the last time,” she starts reading with a tremor in her voice. “A child deserves parents who are physically and emotionally present, Lisa and I missed this foundation throughout our childhood, a foundation of love and trust.”

Absent father

She explains that she is proud of how they have become who they are today despite the damage caused by their absent father. “You took a lot from me, the least of which is money.”

She declares that they have moved on with their lives, as he did in Thailand. “You will always be our father, but you have never been a father figure to us.” After that message, Bram drives away on his scooter without saying much.
