May 4 commemorations Groningen | Morning program

During the National Remembrance Day on May 4, we commemorate all – civilians and military personnel – who have died in the Kingdom of the Netherlands or anywhere in the world since the outbreak of the Second World War, in war situations and during peace missions.

Wreaths and flowers were laid at memorial stones and monuments.

We were present at:

  • 11.25 am Esserveld Cemetery, Esserweg: graves of the fallen Allied soldiers, killed resistance fighters and the war memorial
  • 12.10 p.m. Wreath laying memorial plaque Scholtenhuis, Naberstraat
  • Subsequently, wreath laying plaque for the killed Canadian soldiers and the plaque for the slain municipal council members. With the collaboration of The Clan MacBeth Pipe Band. Location City Hall, Grote Markt

Tonight, around half past six, a Silent Tour preceded by Gruno’s Postharmonie Groningen. Route: Hereweg, Gedempte Zuiderdiep, Oosterstraat, Grote Markt, Kreupelstraat, Martinikerkhof.

At 8 p.m., two strikes of the bell of the Martini Tower as a sign of the start of the Two Minutes of Silence, followed by the Wilhelmus, verses 1 and 6. King’s Commissioner René Paas will give a speech followed by the official wreath laying ceremony.
