FOOTBALL – A victory in the last regular competition match of the season against De Graafschap will almost certainly give FC Emmen a place in the play-offs, but there is a catch. A Maastricht catch to be precise.
If MVV wins against VVV-Venlo on Friday, the club from Maastricht can still finish second in the battle for the fourth and final period title. If that works, MVV (as number 2 in the fourth period) will grab the last play-off ticket and there will be no place in the play-offs for number 8 in the regular standings of the Kitchen Champion Division. At the moment it is FC Emmen, but NAC can also end up there. The difference between NAC and FC Emmen is one point. NAC will play at TOP Oss next Friday.
MVV is, however, dependent on the results on three other fields. If Willem II or FC Dordrecht manage to beat Telstar and Jong FC Utrecht respectively next Friday, then 2nd place in the final standings of the 4th period will no longer be feasible for MVV. The same is the case if FC Groningen draws or wins against Roda JC. Even then, there is no play-off ticket for MVV based on the final score in the period.
In that case, the last ticket for the play-offs goes to number 8 in the regular competition. At the moment it is FC Emmen, with 54 points. NAC is 7th with 55 points and MVV is now in 9th place with 53 points. In short, there are still two play-off tickets available for which three clubs are competing.

If FC Emmen wins, MVV is no longer a threat to Emmen in this scenario and the only question is whether the Drenthe club will end up 7th or 8th. This in turn has consequences for the opponent in the 1st round of the play-offs.
