Samsung S95D-QD OLED TV Review – Tweakers

--

In summary

The S95D television is Samsung’s new QD OLED top model for 2024 and the first OLED TV with a matte screen. The television thus manages to keep annoying reflections to a minimum. The S95D also has the highest brightness of all OLED televisions we have tested so far. The image quality in SDR display is very good and even excellent in HDR mode. Thanks to four HDMI 2.1 ports with 144Hz VRR, the TV is also well equipped for gamers. Despite its quite high price, the S95D is an excellent choice if you are looking for the best possible image quality without disturbing reflections.

OLED televisions are known for their pitch-black display and rarely surpassed color reproduction. We take it for granted that light sources inside and outside the viewing room quickly cause annoying reflections. During the day the curtains are closed and in the evening we dim the lights. Hopefully, this will no longer be necessary with Samsung’s latest QD OLED top model, the Samsung S95D. It is the first OLED TV with a matte screen that helps keep reflections in the image to a minimum.

Samsung also says it has increased the peak brightness by about 20 percent compared to last year’s predecessor: the Samsung S95C. We are curious to see how the TV can compare in this area with the also new LG G4, which at the time of writing we are still extensively testing in our test lab. The top OLED models from other manufacturers will have to wait a while, so the battle for who has the fiercest will be between LG and Samsung for the time being.

Furthermore, the TV resembles Samsung’s top model from last year in many ways. Once again, all connections are housed in an external One Connect Box, which you connect to the TV with just one cable.

However, the suggested retail prices of the S95D are across the board 100 euros higher than the introductory price of the S95C last year. However, during the month that the TV has been available, the actual prices have already dropped considerably. The Samsung S95D is for sale in 55, 65 and 77 inches with starting prices from 2399 to 4149 euros, depending on the screen diagonal. Our tested 55” model is therefore about 100 euros more expensive than the equally large LG OLED55G45LW, which does not have a matte screen.
