A record amount of fireworks was bought this year. According to the Interest Association Pyrotechniek Nederland (BPN), fireworks dealers have had a turnover of 110 million euros.

The sales record so far was at the turn of the year 2019-2020, when fireworks worth 77 million euros were set off. The following two years there was a fireworks ban due to the corona pandemic.

According to a BPN spokesperson, 10 percent of the increased turnover is due to inflation and the higher price of fireworks. “The rest is really because a lot more has been sold. The enthusiasm for fireworks is very great this year.”

The industry previously expected that sales would amount to around 85 million euros. This is because about one and a half to two times more orders were placed in presale than in 2019. Orders could already be placed since mid-November and fireworks could be bought in the shops in the past three days.

The fireworks industry thinks that fireworks enthusiasts are so enthusiastic this year because they were allowed to buy fireworks again after two new years with a national ban. This year, the boxes with “a complete fireworks show”, so-called cakes, are especially popular.

Lighting fireworks is allowed between December 31, 6 p.m. and January 1, 2 a.m

A quarter of the fireworks sold are so-called F1 fireworks, or joke and joke fireworks such as sparklers and bang peas. The rest is F2 fireworks: decorative fireworks such as cakes, compound boxes, ground flowers and fountains. Since 2020, there has been a ban on bang fireworks such as firecrackers and loose flares, also known as category F3 fireworks.

Fireworks may be set off between December 31, 6 p.m. and January 1, 2 a.m. In twelve municipalities there is a ban on New Year’s Eve, but fireworks may be sold there. According to the spokesperson for BPN, this happened in abundance. “No less was sold in those municipalities than in municipalities without a lighting ban.”
