A judge in Los Angeles has placed singer Brian Wilson under supervision. The 81-year-old co-founder of The Beach Boys suffers from a form of dementia and is no longer able to care for himself.

The request for guardianship was submitted by his children at the beginning of this year, reports ABC.

Wilson’s wife Melinda, who died at the end of January at the age of 77, helped him for years and guided him during his illness. After her death, Wilson’s family asked the judge to appoint a curator.

According to his family, Wilson is “easily distracted”, often makes “spontaneous, irrelevant or incoherent statements” and is “often unable to muster the decency appropriate to the situation”.

Wilson founded the band The Beach Boys in 1961 with his brothers Dennis and Carl. The group is known for hits such as Good Vibrations, Wouldn’t It Be Nice and God Only Knows.
