People with autism are increasingly popular with employers: ‘They are very loyal and work in a specialist manner’

More and more employers are seeing the benefits of hiring people with autism, says career coach Anne-Marije Buckens. “Employers increasingly see the qualities of people above the labels they receive,” she says in Goedemorgen Nederland on NPO 1.

On World Autism Day it is a good development on the labor market, Buckens thinks. “Employers are increasingly going for inclusivity. It is important that we do not divide people according to disability, age or background, but that we look each other in the eye and say: what can you do and what makes your heart beat faster? We have to hire people based on that instead of the label that hangs on them.”

Good qualities

Buckens says that people with autism have many qualities. “They are loyal. If they are having a good time somewhere, they will stay there.” In addition, people with autism can concentrate well on one task. “They can work in a very specialized way and delve deeply into something. They also often have good technical insight.”

Buckens also sees that people with autism are increasingly better trained and better guided to enter the labor market.

Autism

Cybersecurity expert Inge Bryan, who has autism and ADHD and is a guest on Goedemorgen Nederland, cannot believe her happiness when she hears this news. “It’s nice to see that there is so much attention for it.” She thinks her autism is the reason she started working in the security sector. “The entire safety concern is about spotting deviations and we are very good at that.”

Bryan is convinced that “if we give each other more space in the labor process, we can reach a great talent pool that was previously not easily employable.”
