It is very easy to point to Schiphol. Schiphol is just a building full of bricks that has a number of services to provide. One of these is baggage handling, which is outsourced to a number of subcontractors. These subcontractors enter into bids with airlines for prices.
If the airlines say they don’t want to pay a cent more, you have 2 choices as a subcontractor:
1. You accept it and continue to pay your staff too little for the physically demanding work
2. You stop as a party and let another party do it.
As a client, Schiphol is only responsible for a safe working environment and items such as hoists. And you can blame Schiphol for the latter. But wages are really determined by the subcontractors who are paid via Schiphol.
And as long as the consumer wants to be able to go to Spain for €20, the margin for all other things remains very small.
In short; everything is due to airlines that do not want to pay higher contributions and do not want to pass these costs on to the consumer.
