Companies are putting on the brakes because of the lawsuits, the CEO sees. They are becoming less transparent about their sustainable goals and are less inclined to sign climate agreements. “Because they think: ooh, I could be attacked for that later.”

Although Sijbesma, as an advocate of sustainability, sympathizes with environmental organizations that want to enforce CO2 reductions in companies, he also sees a downside. Companies are taking a step back. Some politicians also no longer want to sign international agreements because they are afraid of lawsuits against the State, the CEO says.

Most influential Dutchman

Feike Sijbesma is chairman of the Supervisory Board at Philips and was previously voted the most influential Dutch person. He is also chairman of various climate organizations, including the World Bank.

During the corona pandemic, the cabinet called on him and he was asked – as corona envoy – to ensure sufficient corona tests. He admits that politicians from the parties at the formation table have also made contact with him in recent months.

“I speak to them about climate, business climate and innovation.” Sijbesma is not interested in a ministerial post.
