The military police point out that since this year, fourteen and fifteen year olds are also allowed to go through self-service passport control. Passengers scan their passports here themselves. “Previously this was from the age of sixteen,” says the spokesperson. “We hope that more families will now take advantage of this, which will save a lot of time.”

He also advises travelers to prepare well so that there are no delays at passport control. When issuing emergency documents, the military police notice that it is busier than normal, as there are long waiting times for renewing a passport in various municipalities. This is due to a spike in the number of applications, which has occurred as a result of a change in regulations that means that many people will need a new ID this year.

Schiphol expects 3.3 million passengers to depart, transfer or arrive at the airport during the May holidays, from next Friday to May 12. That is 10 percent more than last year in this period. An average of more than 70,000 travelers depart every day. On peak days, at the start of the holidays, this is more than 80,000 per day.
