Volt leader Dassen at a party conference on the European Parliament elections

NOS Newstoday, 3:47 PM

Opposition party Volt believes that party leaders Yesilgöz (VVD) and Omtzigt (NSC) make the ideas of PVV leader Wilders “normal”. According to party leader Dassen, it is about sowing division and claims that the Netherlands can solve problems on its own and not with other European countries. Wilders “dictates”, while Omtzigt and Yesilgöz “allow themselves to be put in front of the PVV bandwagon”, Dassen said at a Volt party conference.

At the conference on the approaching European elections, the Volt leader strongly criticized the three parties, which are now holding formation talks with BBB. According to Dassen, Wilders, together with Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán and French politician Le Pen, belongs to “the false prophets”, by claiming that we can get a grip on our future by putting “the real Dutchman” first.

Tacit

But the attitude of the VVD and NSC in the Netherlands is also a major problem, according to Dassen. “They make normal what should never be normal in a democracy.” The Volt leader pointed out that it is never a single great leader who “blurs the norms.” “But the leaders who stand next to it and watch in silence.”

Dassen believes that Yesilgöz and Omtzigt should keep their backs straight and show leadership, even if it costs seats and turns out poorly in the opinion polls. “Every day is one on which you can still turn around. Because if you are a leader, you dare to stand for democracy and the rule of law, then you dare to stand for what connects us all.”

Unique

Dassen is concerned about the increasing nationalism in Europe, especially in Hungary, France and the Netherlands. He believes in the bundling of pro-European advocates, as happens at Volt. This party will participate in the European Parliament elections in fourteen countries in June.

The Volt leader calls Europe “unique”, which people want to be part of. He thinks that only a united Europe can cope with major problems such as war, climate change and increasing economic competition from other major powers in the world.

Dassen hopes that the elections will turn out well for Volt. “Because a party that is only active in one country, that only thinks from a national perspective in a time of international challenges,” Dassen concluded, “condemns itself to a policy that allows the world to happen to itself.”
