Billie Eilish had no friends for a long time because she was obsessed with the idea of remaining mysterious. The singer tells Rolling Stone that she has been building friendships since her twentieth birthday.

22-year-old Eilish told the music magazine that she undertook few social activities because she was afraid that this would detract from the mystery surrounding her. “I really strove for that. I was obsessed with being mysterious. I 100 percent think that’s why I didn’t make friends.”

“I didn’t want anyone to know me because everyone should think I’m cool and mysterious.” After a while, the singer began to realize that the idea that others thought this way about her did not benefit her at all. “I didn’t enjoy anything in my life.”

On her twentieth birthday she decided to do things differently. “I looked around and everyone I celebrated my birthday with was an employee of mine. I thought, oh shit, I literally have no friends. I have no one who sees me as an equal. I have no people who aren’t afraid of me are.”

Actress Zoë Kravitz was one of the first people Eilish befriended. She asked Eilish several times to spend time together, but the singer declined. “I remember her asking me point-blank, ‘Why don’t you want to do something fun with me?'”

Eilish then realized that her main fear was that people wouldn’t like her if they got to know her better. “I was able to put that idea aside and I now spend time with friends. It’s good if they get to know me.”
