Gustav Klimt’s painting Portrait of Fräulein Lieser fetched 30 million euros at auction. The artwork was missing for almost a hundred years, but recently resurfaced in Vienna.

The value of the painting was estimated in advance at 30 to 50 million euros. Klimt probably painted it in 1917, a year before his death. The painting was exhibited in 1925, but after that it disappeared. The then owner was deported and murdered during the Second World War.

The current seller appeared to have owned the work since 1960. Despite research, there is no explanation for the gap between 1925 and 1960.

It is unclear what exactly happened to the work. It could have been stolen by the Nazis, although there is no evidence of this. Another possibility is that the family sold it. The heirs never reclaimed it.
