At the table during the football talk programme Rondo Kluivert was asked about a possible role within Ajax. “I’m not here to claim a job,” he began cautiously. “But it does hurt to see your club like this, so who knows. In any case, I haven’t spoken to anyone yet.”

Kluivert later made it clear that he is interested in a renewed collaboration with Ajax and that he considers himself the right man to help the club. He was asked why he has not yet been approached by Ajax. “That is a very good question. I ask myself that too.”
Not only does he see himself in a role in the club’s technical policy, but he would also like to work as a trainer. “I think I am suitable for that. I think that on a personal level I can convey my experiences well to the players. I’m definitely an Ajax man. I’m not looking for recognition or anything like that, but it would be nice.”
Fairy tale in Turkey ended in flop
In any case, Kluivert is available. Earlier this year, his contract with Adana Demirspor was terminated, meaning he is now without a club. The former all-time top scorer of the Dutch team opened up to Rondo about his turbulent period in Turkey.
In July 2023 it was announced that Kluivert would start working in Turkey. He led Adana Demirspor to fourth place in the Turkish league, but then suddenly left. “We terminated the contract in consultation,” Kluivert said. “We have done very well and even fantastically in a European context.” Adana just missed the group stage of the Conference League after penalties.

That also created a lot of enthusiasm within the club. “After that we continued in the right direction. The president had not yet put on his kicks. He stood on the field, took selfies and went live on Instagram during warm-ups before a game. That started to irritate the staff (Winston Bogarde and Zeljko Petrovic, ed.) and me a bit. But we thought: maybe that’s normal in Turkey.”
Then the real problems started in Adana. “We were doing well and achieved good results, but at one point we did not receive our salary. First one month, then two, then three. At some point the players also started complaining. During the training it started to take over that they were not being paid either.”
Overdue payments
“I could do without the money for a while, but my staff and the players also had to pay for things. At one point we lost to Sivasspor and then the technical director and the one who did the negotiations came to me. They wanted one mutual agreement. They didn’t want to continue and neither did I.”

What was the reason for that? “They had the feeling that I no longer had the upper hand in the selection, but that was not the case at all. We were fourth.” Ultimately, both parties parted ways and to this day Kluivert has not received a cent of the overdue payments. “It’s up to FIFA. I’ll get it eventually, but it’s annoying.”
