Last weekend, about thirty people slept in the shelter for Ukrainians in the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht. Since the end of February, only vulnerable people have been accommodated in the so-called hub, because it was too full.

On the night from Friday to Saturday, 32 Ukrainians slept in the hall, the next two nights 31. No one was turned away. On the night from Monday to Tuesday, 31 people again slept in the shelter. The door was kept closed for four people that night.

The shelter will remain closed for the time being, a spokesperson for the Utrecht Safety Region said on Tuesday afternoon, even though about thirty people are now staying there. The security region previously said it would reopen the shelter as soon as the number of Ukrainians who have to spend the night there falls below the limit of eighty people and there are sufficient available shelter places in the country.

Fifty

“The first condition has been met,” the spokesperson explains. “But there are still too few structural shelters available to relocate people.” The Jaarbeurs has room for 140 people. When the shelter was still open, about fifty refugees arrived every day.

The municipal reception centers in the country currently have 570 beds available, figures published last Tuesday by the Ministry of Justice and Security showed.
