The Netherlands will become a host country for the institution that must ensure that the damage caused by the war in Ukraine is compensated. At a conference at the World Forum in The Hague that focused on justice for Ukraine, the 44 countries represented agreed to a Dutch proposal.

Outgoing Minister Hanke Bruins Slot (Foreign Affairs) said at the closing press conference that the Netherlands will host “under certain conditions”. One of those conditions is that there is a “clear legal framework” for the “compensation mechanism”.

During the conference, the register was opened where Ukrainians can report their damages. Initially they can only cause damage to their homes. According to Bruins Slot, more than a hundred damage reports were made on the first day. According to the minister, that number is growing by the hour.

It is not yet clear how the compensation will be paid. Bruins Slot suggested earlier on Tuesday to use the frozen Russian assets for this purpose. The compensation mechanism must ensure that Ukrainians are compensated for their damages. The United Nations General Assembly has previously called for the establishment of such a mechanism.
